Course Theme:

This course is designed to help heathcare practitioners improve healthcare results by improving the systems and processes in which they work on a daily basis through the use of:

• statistical process control tools
• data driven, analytical, process control tools
• identification of process flow variables, causes of variation, and ideas for improvement

The course will consist of a semester long case study where YOU create the project from your own workplace, then improve or solve it. Each week or so, a new quality tool will be explored, to help you on your project - one quality tool at a time. You will choose a problem that needs correcting or a process that needs improving. Your final deliverable will be a report that could be submitted in your workplace.

• Pareto charts

• sampling
• scatter diagrams
• variables control charts

These are the key analytical tools that help identify causes of process variation, determine process stability and capability, predict the outcomes of processes, and intelligently plan for the future.

Joint Commission Driven:

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the National Commission on Quality Assurance (NCQA) in their recently released standards continue to move healthcare in the direction of:

• studying data over time
• moving from tables of numbers to graphical display of data
• measuring stability of important processes
• measuring stability of outcomes
• including statistical process control techniques in the data assessment process
